Tips for  New Students

CLOTHING

Clothing, like everything else here is little expensive; (Wait for amazing deals at some  of the Outlets!), so bring adequate amounts of clothing with you. Come armed with some woollens, jackets and umbrellas to carry you through the first few days. It does get quite
cold here in winter - with temperatures occasionally dropping to -10 to -20 degrees C - and the padded winter jacket that you need then is best bought here. Also, it does get fairly  hot in summer - as high as 35 deg. So bring along some cool comfortable cotton clothes also.

COOKING

Surprisingly enough, almost everything you can think of is available here. There are some grocery stores here where you can buy all the rice, flour, dal and spices that you need.  Cooking vessels are best brought here (microwaveable stuff esp.) but if you are real  enthusiast then bring along some things. The only thing that will not be available here is  your mother's culinary expertise. So, before you take off from home, learn, at least, the rudiments of cooking like how much is too much! Eating out on a daily basis is expensive and can get quite boring. The good thing is that within a month...Mother necessity...forces
you to cook up a reasonably good meal or two.

BEYOND BARE: MORE ABOUT CAMPUS LIFE

After you have figured out where you are going to sleep and eat, there are a few more necessities of campus life. Open a Bank Account. Find your way around campus. See what kind of computing facilities are available in your department and what sort of accounts you need to use them.

ACADEMICS

Oh yeah, and then there's that education. Find out when classes start, where are your classes held, who are your professors, what books you need and what are the requirements of the course. Visit the library. When you're having problems (well, maybe not you, but your friends?) ask students who have been around longer than you for help.

GET A (SOCIAL) LIFE

Once you've unpacked your toothbrush, now what do you do? Attend all kinds of campus events. Getting in touch with friends and participating in activities is the best way to avoid  boredom and loneliness.

BILLS

Now that you've got everthing you need to survive here, many of you may be thinking...how am I going to pay for all this? Find out about on-campus jobs, funding from your supervisors, TA and RA positions in your departments, deadlines for scholarships.

Finally, all the best and have a great time at WESTERN.
